Overseas Guest Speaker

Melbourne Convention 2017 Overseas Guest Speaker, DEREK MUNDY
We are pleased to announce that the overseas guest speaker at this year’s convention will be Derek Mundy. Derek is an elder statesman of the British railway modelling hobby and has a wealth of experience to pass on to us.
Derek has had a lifelong interest in the Railways of Britain and cut his teeth watching trains on the East Coast main line from Kings Cross to Edinburgh during the latter days of the LNER, so can recall Gresley's A4s with chrome letters and numbers! But he is not just an LNER man, periods living in Wales and on the South Coast of England have also given him a great appreciation for the GWR and Southern Regions. He has also lived in the midlands, so the LMS has not been forgotten either!
For Derek, modelling followed the usual pattern, starting with Hornby Dublo trains and with metalworking skills gained in school; this provided a foundation for the hobby to flourish later. Over the years, his skills and experience increased and this reached a notable point when he joined the EM Gauge Society around 1965. A long period of scratch building in 4mm scale ensued.
Realism in operating exhibition layouts was becoming more important and experiments were made with a form of hook and bar coupling, made from wire and brass sheet, activated by magnets in the track bed. The laborious method of manufacture of this by hand, led to the thoughts of etching the parts required. So was born the Sprat and Winkle Line autocoupling, in the mid 1970s.
In the same way, nothing suitable was available in the market to make high quality signals and this lead to the production of signal components by the etching method. In time this was commercialised and the business Model Signal Engineering was formed.
Derek’s next move was in to O Gauge where, as always, he became heavily involved, including membership of the O Gauge Guild’s technical committee.
More recently, Derek has retired from the commercial aspects of the hobby and his businesses have been passed on to other owners. But he has not retired from modelling and certainly not from efforts to pass on his knowledge to others. Derek still takes his demonstration table to a good number of shows in the UK each year and as this piece is being written, he is currently “doing his thing” at his 40th consecutive York Easter Exhibition.
Derek has told us that he can “talk for England” and he has offered us a broad range of topics that he can present. So we are really excited about the prospect of having him with us, hearing what he has to say and tapping in to some of his vast knowledge!
